MEET THE 2024 FELLOWS

2024 Fellows Ari Afsar and Wildlin Pierrevil are partnering with the Justice Beyond Punishment Campaign to create pieces of artivism addressing state violence and advocating for more effective approaches to safety and justice.

The fellowship will culminate on September 16th with a Night of Artivism, where they will showcase their work to the public at Abrons Art Center.

  • The Justice Beyond Punishment Campaign (JBPC)

    Advocacy Partner JBPC is working to end state violence and the reliance on punishment, criminalization, and incarceration as the primary responses to interpersonal violence, and to advance more just and effective approaches to safety and justice. Learn more at www.beyondpunishment.org.

  • Ari Afsar

    Through the fellowship, Ari has collaborated with Justice Beyond Punishment and justice-impacted individuals to develop the 'A Community Safety Song Cycle,' a collection of letters and songs created with 5-8 advocates. The piece explores community safety through 5-8 songs, addressing issues such as changing federal judges' perspectives through personal connections.

  • Wildlin Pierrevil

    Through the fellowship, Wildlin collaborated with Justice Beyond Punishment and justice-impacted individuals to develop "I Wrote You, Did You Get It ” The play follows Booker and Salim as they navigate reentry after incarceration, exploring resilience, redemption, and community through heartfelt dialogues, musical interludes, and an ensemble reflecting the experiences of the directly impacted.

Meet Wildlin

Wildlin (He/They) is a proud Haitian-American born and raised in Orlando, FL. The most online person you know, Wildlin has garnered a following of over 600,000 and millions of likes with his comedy, creativity, and commentary across digital platforms as @NOTWILDLIN. As an actor, writer, and personality, he’s been feature in publications like the Washington Post and is so excited to be sharing his work with you through BAC’s initiative.

Meet Ari 

Ari Afsar (she/her) is a Bangladeshi-American singer, songwriter, and storyteller who believes in the power of art changing culture, and culture changing policy. A UCLA Ethnomusicology alum, her album "We Won't Sleep" under Sony Masterworks showcases her diverse talent. She is also the composer of  "Jeannette," featured at renowned theaters and institutions, and has opened for influential figures like Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris. Currently pursuing an MPA at NYU Wagner, she continues to advocate for change through art, activism, and public service.

  • BAC’s Night of Artivism is an evening dedicated to showcasing the power of justice-responsive, music-centered artivism. This production, performed by those directly affected by the issues alongside industry performers, supports Justice Beyond Punishment, a transformative campaign driven by over 10 organizations across New York state. The campaign aims to shift narratives and cultural perceptions surrounding violence, punishment, safety, and justice.
